ABOUT LOST NEBULA

Set in outer space, Lost Nebula is a physical board game with 4 players working together as astronauts on a mission to save a dying Earth by collecting energy crystals scattered throughout the galaxy, all while defending themselves against alien attacks.

The goal of the game is get players to save their resources and invest their energy crystals across four types of energy generators with varying degrees of risk, yield, and time—thereby building a diversified portfolio..

DIVERSIFIED PORTFOLIO

Solar_Sail
SOLAR SAIL (HIGH RISK, HIGH YIELD, SHORT TERM)

The energy in each energy capsule can change from 20-180. This number fluctuates more often than the others. The generator might malfunction, causing the player to lose all capsules. Player can buy and then sell at their next turn.

Bio_Mass
BIOMASS (MEDIUM RISK, MEDIUM YIELD, SHORT TERM)

Energy points go from 50 to 150. The number does not fluctuate as often as Solar Sail. There’s a lower chance of malfunctioning. Player can buy and then sell at their next turn.

Nuclear
NUCLEAR FUSION REACTOR (LOW RISK, MEDIUM YIELD, LONG TERM, HIGH ENTRY POINT)

Energy points go from 70-140. It doesn’t fluctuate often. No chance of malfunctioning. The player needs to wait for two turns to sell. The only catch is that you need to at least buy 5 capsules on a turn whereas the other ones you only need to buy one.

SOLAR PANEL (LOW RISK, LOW YIELD, LONG TERM)

Basically a savings account that gives you “interest” but you need to wait for 3 turns to be able to withdraw.

THE STRATEGY TO WIN

They grapple with challenges like the need to moderate risk and plan for emergencies and shortages, while also generating a sustainable return, amid unstable planets prone to exploding and attacks from aliens, which dictate the need for a risk-mitigated portfolio and emergency fund.

As in life, the strategy to win will hinge around saving, investing early, and diversifying, instead of spending their resources immediately. Though in most cases, the players will learn this lesson the hard way, losing quickly after only a few turns.

STARTING OUR FINANCIAL EDUCATION EARLY, BUILDING A LIFE-LONG RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOUNGER GENERATIONS AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS

Fundamentally, this project is about more than just a board game—it is about the importance of starting our financial education early, building a life-long relationship between younger generations and financial institutions, and doing that in a fun and socially engaging way.

And doing this learning in an experiential, fun way.

In that sense, we have found in our play-testing that the Lost Nebula project need not be limited to children, but something that is accessible enough to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. So we are using this as an opportunity to rethink the physical bank branch as a space of social interaction and as a place of learning for all. This can lead to new models of human interaction and tailored advising, as we live through the transformation of everything into services.

By awakening minds, both young and old, to the importance of financial health in new ways, we can take away the anxiety and discomfort around banks, while at the same time, preparing people for a future of sound financial health and prosperity.
